2007 Pathways to Higher Education Award Winners

K-12

Biotechnology: Concepts and Technology - Mesa High School Biotechnology Academy, Xan Simonson

The Mesa High School Biotechnology Academy's program "Biotechnology: Concepts and Technology" is designed to identify underachieving capable students and to equip them with marketable skills while preparing them for success in a variety of postsecondary options. Ultimately, the goal is to create a seamless transition from high school to postsecondary through a 2+2+2 program. The Biotechnology Academy is working closely with Mesa Community College and Arizona State University Polytechnic through federal and state grants to accomplish this goal. The Academy has also taken on a secondary role of outreach in the hope that similar programs can be established in neighboring districts.

Higher Education

Math-Science Honors Program - Arizona State University, Cynthia Barragán-Romero & Rebeca Ronstadt-Contreras

The Math-Science Honors Program (MSHP) is a competitive residential program for talented high school sophomores, juniors, or seniors. MSHP offers motivated students an outstanding opportunity to begin university mathematics and science studies while in high school. MSHP is designed to provide a successful university experience for students under-represented in the fields of mathematics and science while enhancing their prospects for future academic success. The philosophy of MSHP is that success in mathematics is predicated on discipline and hard work. Classes are rigorous and standards are high. The program includes instruction in a traditional format, daily problem solving sessions, and tutoring.
