Pathways to Education Award Winners 2006

1st Place Community Division
Arizona Academic Scholars
Cari Garrigus, Executive Director
Snowflake Taylor Chamber of Commerce
Monte Silk, Superintendent Snowflake U. S. D.

Arizona Academic Scholars brings together business volunteers and educators to encourage students to complete challenging courses during high school that will prepare them for higher education after graduation. The Scholars Course of Study gives students the foundation they need to succeed in a technical school, community college, or university. The focus is on average students who would not otherwise set rigorous academic goals for themselves in high school or beyond.

Project Excellence
Melanie Sainz, Program Director
Phoenix Country Day School

Project Excellence is a community outreach program of Phoenix Country Day School that invites gifted students from inner-city schools to the PCDS campus for academic enrichment. Founded in 1987, Project Excellence strived to motivate students to stay in school through high school. The scope has since been extended to include counseling, guidance and encouragement for Scholars to stay active in the program, excel in school and attend college. The program provides a culture and climate composed of peers committed to academic excellence and teachers and families dedicated to providing encouragement and opportunities for personal growth.

1st Place Business Division
Bridge to Classroom Scholarship Program
Jan Miller, SRP Community Outreach
SRP Community Outreach

The SRP Bridge to Classroom Scholarship program is designed for education majors from the Arizona State University West College of Teacher Education and Leadership (CTEL). The focus is student teachers with strong academic standing combined with financial need, and with preference given to qualified Hispanic students who can also serve as role models for the growing numbers of Hispanic children coming into Arizona's educational system. A premium is put on students interested in teaching at high needs schools, and who are dual-language certified.

1st Place K-12 Division
Life Guides
Program Coordinators: Teri Fields, Sunnyslope H.S.
Linda Brown, Desert View Elementary School

Life Guides provides self-esteem, learning skills, and motivation for high school students to get their diplomas, investigate college, and consider careers in education. Each high school Life Guide is assigned to a specific elementary classroom four days a week to work with struggling students on meeting academic goals. Though many Life Guides are classified as "at-risk" students themselves, they become such heroes to the young children that the Life Guides see themselves as role models. Their attendance improves and understanding how others learn, they see ways to improve their own learning. Realizing the difference they make in children's lives, Life Guides begin to consider a career in education.

1st Place Higher Education Division
College Academy for Parents
Abra McAndrew, Program Coordinator
Rudy McCormick, Assistant Director U of A

The College Academy for Parents (CAP) is an educational partnership between The University of Arizona and the Sunnyside Unified School District. The 12-week comprehensive program is designed to help K-6 parents formulate a strategy to prepare their children for a university education. An important component of the program is bringing university faculty to the local middle schools to provide an understanding of the core academic areas required for university admissions. Families participate in two university visitations that help families become familiar with the UA campus. All information is provided in English and Spanish, as half of the parent participants are monolingual Spanish speakers.
